KERALA’S MUNDAM NERIYATHUM:

Kerala’s Mundum Neriyathum is a traditional attire that holds a special place in the cultural heritage of the state. It is considered the oldest form of the saree and is often referred to as Kerala saree. This elegant and minimalist attire is emblematic of the simplicity and grace associated with Kerala’s culture.

Features of Mundum Neriyathum:

• Two-Piece Attire:

  • Mundu: The lower garment, called the “Mundu,” is a piece of cloth wrapped around the waist like a skirt. It typically reaches the ankles and is usually plain white or cream in color, symbolizing purity.
  • Neriyathu: The upper garment, called the “Neriyathu,” is draped over the upper body. It is worn over a blouse (typically short-sleeved), with one end tucked into the waist and the other end draped over the shoulder like a pallu.

• Fabric and Design: Mundum Neriyathum is usually made of handwoven cotton, making it comfortable in Kerala’s warm and humid climate. The traditional version is plain, with a golden zari (border), known as “Kasavu,” which adds a touch of elegance. The Kasavu borders vary in thickness, with more elaborate versions used for special occasions.

  2. Neriyathu: The Neriyathu is draped over the blouse, with one end tucked into the Mundu at the waist and the other end gracefully draped over the left shoulder. The Neriyathu is often pleated before draping, especially on festive occasions.

Cultural Significance:

Mundum Neriyathum is not just a garment but a symbol of Kerala’s cultural identity. It is especially significant during festivals like Onam and Vishu, where it is worn by women as part of the traditional dress. आधुनिक रूपांतर:
