National Science Day 2025:
Celebrating Innovation & Scientific Progress

Honoring the discovery of the Raman Effect by Sir C.V. Raman in 1928 — a legacy that continues to inspire generations of scientists and innovators across India.

Introduction

National Science Day is celebrated annually on February 28th in India to honor the discovery of the Raman Effect by Sir C.V. Raman in 1928. This groundbreaking scientific achievement earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, making him the first Indian scientist to receive this prestigious award. The day serves as a tribute to scientific excellence, inspiring young minds and highlighting the importance of science and technology in shaping the future of India.

"The essence of science is independent thinking, hard work, and not accepting things at face value." — Sir C.V. Raman

Theme for National Science Day 2025

Every year, the Government of India announces a unique theme for National Science Day through the Ministry of Science & Technology and the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC). The theme for 2025 is expected to focus on "Empowering India through Science & Technology for Viksit Bharat @2047" — emphasizing innovation, self-reliance, and the role of science in achieving developed nation status by 2047.

The official theme will guide discussions, exhibitions, and events across educational institutions and research centers nationwide. Previous themes have included "Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat" (2024), "Global Science for Global Wellbeing" (2023), and "Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future" (2022).

History & Origin

National Science Day was first celebrated on February 28, 1987, following a proposal by the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC). The proposal aimed to recognize the contributions of Indian scientists and to inspire public appreciation for scientific advancements.

1928 - Sir C.V. Raman discovers the Raman Effect
1930 - Raman awarded Nobel Prize in Physics
1986 - NCSTC proposes National Science Day
1987 - First National Science Day celebrated
2025 - 38th National Science Day
