Ashwin Krishna Chaturdashi Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated to commemorate the prowess of Krishna. On this day, by killing Alakshmi early in the morning, we want to destroy the hellish sinful desires and ego. Only after that the veil of ego on the soul will be removed and the Atma Jyot will shine.
धनत्रयोदशीनंतर नरक चतुर्दशी साजरी करण्यात येते. यामागे एक पौराणिक कथा सांगितली जाते. नरकासुर नावाच्या दैत्याने पृथ्वीवर त्याच्या विध्वंसक वर्तनाने नरक बनविला होता. अर्थात, पृथ्वीला दैन्य स्वरूप त्याने आणले होते. शिवाय, सोळा हजार कन्याही बंदी बनविल्या होत्या. त्याच्या अशा उन्मादामुळे भगवान श्रीकृष्णाने नरकासुराचा या दिवशी वध करून मानवजातीला राक्षसी वृत्तींच्या बंधनातून मुक्त केले होते.
एका संकल्पनेनुसार देहाभिमानाही नरकासुराचे प्रतीक आहे. काम, क्रोधादि षड्विकार ही या नरकासुराची अस्त्रे आहेत. बंदी असणाऱ्या सोळा हजार कन्या पवित्र वृत्तीच्या आत्म्यांचे, पण देहबुद्धीत अडकलेली प्रतीके आहेत. चांगल्या वृत्तींच्या आर्त हाकेपोटी परमेश्वराने मानवीविश्वाकडे धाव घेण्याचा दिवस म्हणून नरक चतुर्दशीला महत्त्व आहे.
कृष्णाच्या पराक्रमाचे स्मरण म्हणून अश्विन कृष्ण चतुर्दशीस नरक चतुर्दशी हा सण साजरा केला जातो. या दिवशी अलक्ष्मीचे पहाटे मर्दन करून आपल्यातील नरकरूपी पापवासनांचा नायनाट व अहंकाराचे उच्चाटन करायचे असते. त्यानंतरच आत्म्यावरील अहंचा पडदा दूर होऊन आत्मज्योत प्रकाशित होईल, असा संकेत यामागे आहे.
