NARAK CHATURDASHI 2024

Diwali festival has a tradition of at least three thousand years, sources say. In ancient times Aryans lived in the North Pole region, from that time the festival of Diwali is celebrated under different names. During Diwali Ashwin Vadya Chaturdashi i.e. Naraka Chaturdashi has special significance for Abhyangasnana.

दिवाळी या सणाला किमान तीन हजार वर्षांची परंपरा आहे, असे संदर्भ सांगतात. प्राचीन काळी आर्यांचे वास्तव्य उत्तर ध्रुव प्रदेशात होते, त्या काळापासून दिवाळी सण वेगवेगळ्या नावांनी साजरा केला जातो. दिवाळीत अश्विन वद्य चतुर्दशी अर्थात, नरक चतुर्दशीला अभ्यंगस्नानाला विशेष महत्त्व आहे.

NARAK CHATURDASHI Is the day falls in the period between the end of Autumn and the beginning of Hemant season. The day conveys the message of starting Abhyanga while facing the cold season of Hemant. It is believed that taking a bath on this day prevents death. During the festival of Diwali, which marks the end of Autumn and the arrival of the Hemant season, bathing with oil for the coming cold period begins with Narak Chaturdashi Abhyangasnana.

शरद ऋतूची अखेर आणि हेमंत ऋतूची सुरुवात या कालावधीत हा दिवस येतो. हेमंत ऋतूतील थंडीला सामोरे जाताना अभ्यंगापासून सुरुवात करण्याचा संदेश हा दिवस देतो. या दिवशी अभ्यंगस्नान केल्याने अपमृत्यू टाळला जातो, अशी भावना आहे. शरद ऋतूचा शेवट आणि हेमंत ऋतूचे आगमन अशा संधिकालावर दिवाळीचा सण साजरा करताना पुढे येणाऱ्या थंडीच्या काळासाठी तेल लावून स्नान करण्याची सुरुवात नरक चतुर्दशीच्या अभ्यंगस्नानापासून होते.

NARAK CHATURDASHI is celebrated after Dhantrayodashi. A legend is told behind this. A demon named Narakasura created hell on earth by his destructive behavior. Of course, he brought a miserable form to the earth. Moreover, sixteen thousand girls were also banned. Due to his frenzy, Lord Krishna killed Narakasura on this day and freed mankind from the bondage of demonic attitudes.

According to one concept, carnality is also a symbol of Narakasura. Kama, Krodhadi Shadvikara are the weapons of this Narakasura. The sixteen thousand forbidden virgins are symbols of souls of a pure nature, but enmeshed in the flesh.

Narak Chaturdashi is significant as the day when the Lord rushes to the human world due to the call of good attitudes. Ashwin Krishna Chaturdashi Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated to commemorate the prowess of Krishna. On this day, by killing Alakshmi early in the morning, we want to destroy the hellish sinful desires and ego. Only after that the veil of ego on the soul will be removed and the Atma Jyot will shine.

धनत्रयोदशीनंतर नरक चतुर्दशी साजरी करण्यात येते. यामागे एक पौराणिक कथा सांगितली जाते. नरकासुर नावाच्या दैत्याने पृथ्वीवर त्याच्या विध्वंसक वर्तनाने नरक बनविला होता. अर्थात, पृथ्वीला दैन्य स्वरूप त्याने आणले होते. शिवाय, सोळा हजार कन्याही बंदी बनविल्या होत्या. त्याच्या अशा उन्मादामुळे भगवान श्रीकृष्णाने नरकासुराचा या दिवशी वध करून मानवजातीला राक्षसी वृत्तींच्या बंधनातून मुक्त केले होते.

एका संकल्पनेनुसार देहाभिमानाही नरकासुराचे प्रतीक आहे. काम, क्रोधादि षड्विकार ही या नरकासुराची अस्त्रे आहेत. बंदी असणाऱ्या सोळा हजार कन्या पवित्र वृत्तीच्या आत्म्यांचे, पण देहबुद्धीत अडकलेली प्रतीके आहेत. चांगल्या वृत्तींच्या आर्त हाकेपोटी परमेश्वराने मानवीविश्वाकडे धाव घेण्याचा दिवस म्हणून नरक चतुर्दशीला महत्त्व आहे.

कृष्णाच्या पराक्रमाचे स्मरण म्हणून अश्विन कृष्ण चतुर्दशीस नरक चतुर्दशी हा सण साजरा केला जातो. या दिवशी अलक्ष्मीचे पहाटे मर्दन करून आपल्यातील नरकरूपी पापवासनांचा नायनाट व अहंकाराचे उच्चाटन करायचे असते. त्यानंतरच आत्म्यावरील अहंचा पडदा दूर होऊन आत्मज्योत प्रकाशित होईल, असा संकेत यामागे आहे.

Abhyangasnan is a bath done early in the morning i.e. before sunrise and after massaging the whole body with oil and applying scented cloths. Abhyangasnana of this kind is of special importance. On this day, early in the morning, it is customary to offer a lamp to Yama in Naraka, or in modern parlance. As Panati is a symbol of dispelling the darkness of ignorance and is a symbol of brightness and prosperity, it is believed that the importance of Deepadaan is great.

अज्ञान दूर करण्याचे, तेज-समृद्धीचे प्रतीक

सकाळी लवकर म्हणजे सूर्योदयापूर्वी उठून संपूर्ण शरीरास तेलाचे मर्दन करून, सुवासिक उटणे लावून केलेले स्नान म्हणजे अभ्यंगस्नान असे म्हटले जाते. अशा प्रकारच्या अभ्यंगस्नानाला विशेष महत्त्व असते. या दिवशी पहाटे यमासाठी नरकात म्हणजे आधुनिक परिभाषेत दीपदान करण्याची (पणती लावण्याची) प्रथा आहे. पणती हे अज्ञानाचा अंध:कार दूर करण्याचे आणि तेज, समृद्धी यांचे प्रतीक असल्याने दीपदानाचे महत्त्व मोठे आहे, असे मानले जाते.
