Mythological Background
According to Hindu mythology:
Lord Krishna was born in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva.
His birth occurred in a prison where his parents were held captive by his tyrant uncle, King Kansa.
To save baby Krishna from Kansa’s evil intentions, Vasudeva carried him across the Yamuna River to Gokul, where he was raised by Yashoda and Nanda Maharaj.
His childhood was filled with miracles, divine play (Leelas), and acts of heroism that later led to the downfall of Kansa.

Fasting (Vrat)
Devotees observe a fast that lasts until midnight, the time of Lord Krishna’s birth. Some people keep a Nirjala Vrat (without food and water), while others take only fruits and milk.
2. Midnight Puja
Krishna is believed to have been born at midnight, so devotees perform Nishita Puja at this time by offering flowers, incense, sweets, and chanting Krishna mantras.
3. Decorating Temples & Homes
Temples and homes are adorned with flowers, rangoli, and lights. Baby Krishna idols are dressed beautifully and placed in decorated cradles.
4. Singing Bhajans & Kirtans
Devotional songs narrating the life and Leelas of Lord Krishna are sung, filling the atmosphere with divine energy.
5. Dahi Handi Celebrations
In Maharashtra and other states, Dahi Handi is celebrated the next day (16 August 2025) to honor Krishna’s playful nature as Makhan Chor (butter thief). Groups of youths form human pyramids to break an earthen pot filled with curd, butter, and sweets.
