The first day marks the arrival of Goddess Gauri in the home. People bring beautifully decorated idols of Jyeshtha Gauri (elder Gauri) and Kanishtha Gauri (younger Gauri), representing two forms of the Goddess.

Rituals & Preparations

  • Women clean and decorate their homes with rangoli, torans (door hangings), and flowers.

  • The idols of Gauri are adorned with traditional Maharashtrian attire, jewelry, and green bangles.

  • Special emphasis is placed on Mangal Dravyas (auspicious items), such as haldi (turmeric), kumkum, bangles, and sarees, which are offered to the Goddess.

This is the most important day of the celebration. Women observe Gauri Pujan with devotion and follow traditional rituals.

Rituals

  • A special puja is performed in the morning, which includes offering flowers, fruits, sweets, and new clothes to the Goddess.

  • Mahalakshmi and Annapurna Devi are also invoked during this puja for wealth and food abundance.

  • Married women invite other women (called haldi-kumkum ceremony) to their homes and offer them gifts, betel leaves, and coconut as a sign of respect and goodwill.

  • Special Naivedya (offering) is prepared, which includes dishes like Puran Poli, Modak, Karanji, and other sweets.

On the final day, the idols of Goddess Gauri are given a heartfelt farewell with Visarjan (immersion in water).

Rituals

  • Before immersion, aarti and prayers are offered, thanking the Goddess for visiting the home.

  • Devotees chant “Gauri Ghar Jau De” (Gauri, go home) with love and devotion.

  • Just like Ganpati Visarjan, the immersion is carried out in rivers, ponds, or artificial tanks to maintain eco-friendliness.
