The concept was proposed by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the UN General Assembly in September 2014
On December 11, 2014, the UN adopted a resolution co-sponsored by 177 member states—the highest ever support for any UN resolution
The first global observance took place on June 21, 2015, with around 36,000 participants in New Delhi and events worldwide in cities like New York, Paris, Bangkok, and Beijing
