Introduction
India is a land that treasures its guru-shishya parampara (teacher-disciple tradition). The festival of Guru Purnima is a day set aside to acknowledge, honor, and express gratitude to our teachers—those who enlighten us with knowledge, wisdom, and guidance.
In 2025, Guru Purnima will be celebrated on Thursday, July 10, during the full moon (Purnima) of the Hindu month Ashadha. This auspicious day holds immense spiritual, historical, and cultural significance across various religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

The Sanskrit word Guru is made of two syllables—“Gu” meaning darkness and “Ru” meaning remover. Thus, a Guru is the remover of ignorance who leads one from darkness to light.
A Guru can be:
A spiritual teacher
An academic teacher
A parent
Or even life itself, when it teaches valuable lessons.
Maharishi Ved Vyasa – The First Guru
Guru Purnima is also celebrated as Vyasa Purnima, to honor Maharishi Ved Vyasa, who:
Authored the Mahabharata
Composed the 18 Puranas
Compiled and classified the four Vedas
He is regarded as the Adi Guru in the Hindu tradition, and Guru Purnima is believed to be his birth anniversary.
In Buddhism
Guru Purnima also marks the day when Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, shortly after attaining enlightenment. This sermon to his five disciples became the foundation of the Sangha—the Buddhist community.
In Jainism
On this day, Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, is said to have made Gautam Swami his first disciple, establishing the path of knowledge transmission in Jainism.
Rituals and Traditions
Guru Purnima is a day of devotion, discipline, and introspection. Devotees observe various customs:
1. Guru Puja
People worship their spiritual or academic gurus. If the guru is no longer alive, one can offer prayers to their photo or symbol (like books or sacred objects).
2. Paduka Puja
In many traditions, disciples worship the padukas (feet or footwear) of their guru as a mark of humility and reverence.
3. Fasting
Many followers observe a day-long fast and consume only satvik (pure) food. This is believed to purify the body and mind.
4. Chanting & Meditation
